Bearberry has the highest natural content of the phenol arbutin (hydroquinone beta-D-glucoside) and has a long history of use as a urinary antiseptic. The hydroquinone aglycone of arbutin, which is released in alkaline urine, is thought to provide its antimicrobial actions.
